A bespoke theatre project inspired by Goodnight Mister Tom
Created with Sir Charles Parsons School, Operation Walker explores themes of friendship, safety and identity through drama.
The project was shaped closely with the school and designed especially for their Year 8 students. Inspired by Goodnight Mister Tom – the story of a wartime evacuee – the workshops gave students space for creativity, reflection and fun while supporting their learning in English.
Led by Cap-a-Pie’s Artistic Director in-role as Sgt. Ryan O’Kane, students consult on a practice evacuation operation, meet characters, solve problems together and explore what it means to build friendships and support others in unfamiliar situations.
Whether using speech, signs or symbols, every student is encouraged to take part. Through games, role play and discussion, young people develop confidence, communication and creative thinking in a supportive environment.
Operation Walker was co-created with staff at Sir Charles Parsons School and built around their students’ learning needs. The workshops were carefully adapted for the group, with shorter sessions, tailored activities and close collaboration with teachers throughout.
Historical objects from North East Museums helped bring the wartime setting to life, while drama encouraged students to explore the themes of Goodnight Mister Tom in an active, engaging way.
As one teacher reflected:
“The whole project just blew me out of the water. They got really involved. Nobody fell behind – they all kept up and supported each other.”
Another moment that stood out was seeing students who don’t usually speak in class volunteer ideas, stay in role and support one another throughout the workshops.
