From Scratch
What a night
of Politician’s speeches:
arms waved, glasses tipped
voices projected.
The rhetoric of love.

What a night
of white coats and clipboards:
questions asked, jokes made
hands held high.
The measure of love.

What a night
of birds and behavior:
joyful union, pain and loss,
repeated mantras.
The tenacity of love.

What a night
of music and movement:
memories and migrations,
the meaning of home.
The heart of love.

What a night
of shock and seduction
roles reversed, the desert heat,
dare to say red.
The exposure of love.

What a night
of insects made human:
Dung beetles dancing,
creepy-crawlers brawling.
The universality of love.

What a night
this cap-a-pie collective:
thirty former strangers;
games played, research staged.
This performance of love.
