17. Module 3 – Using documents

Welcome to Module 3 which will focus on using historical documents in your teaching. Although using written resources requires greater levels of literacy than object and image-based learning, historical documents still have the power to engage your students and can really enhance their knowledge and understanding of a topic. Furthermore, documents such as diaries and personal letters can also help them to develop their empathy skills. 

Learning Objectives

By the end of this module you will: 

– Understand how palaeography activities can be used to engage students with historical documents.
– Understand how layers of inference diagrams can be used to get students to move beyond simple comprehension of historical documents. 
– Understand how Y-Notes graphic organisers can be used to help students identify similarities and differences between written sources.
